This project began back in Fall 2012 as “Arts One Digital.” But we have now decided to change its name to “Arts One Open.”
There are many reasons for this change of emphasis. Arts One Open is of course a contribution to what are known as the “digital humanities.” We use technology and the Internet to enrich the student learning experience and expand the sphere and effect of teaching at UBC.
But what makes Arts One Open significant is not so much the distinction between digital and analogue. After all, we also rely on traditional media such as books and even the spoken word.
What is important here, rather, is the distinction between open and closed. We are committed to opening up the university, opening up the resources we are providing, and opening access to the kinds of teaching and learning that Arts One has been offering since 1967.
Hence everything on this site is released under a creative commons license. We see ourselves as a proud part of OPEN UBC, looking to “contribute to knowledge and understanding within and across disciplines, and [seeking] every opportunity to share them broadly.”
UBC’s motto is “Tuum Est”: “It’s Yours” or “It’s Up to You.” We are making good on and expanding that promise. Arts One Open: It’s Up to You.
